Welspun Corp Ltd. and Tata Steel Ltd. have signed an MoU to develop the framework and build awareness of the usage of Green Hydrogen for a better future.
The Green Energy Strategic Partnership between Welspun Corp Ltd. and Tata Steel Ltd. is to assess the suitability of a variety of pipes manufactured by WCL for the transportation of the fuel of the future. This will aid in mitigating climate change-led issues and build a secure future for posterity. Hydrogen will play a significant role in decarbonizing the world’s energy supply. This MoU will enhance the general understanding and knowledge of the transportation of hydrogen globally.
Welspun Corp has a goal of achieving ‘Carbon Neutrality’ by the year 2040 across all its operations. In its pursuit of becoming a benchmark in CO2 emissions, Tata Steel India has taken a target to achieve CO2 emission intensity of <1.8 tonne of CO2 per tonne of crude steel by 2030.
The Green Energy Strategic Partnership between Welspun Corp and Tata Steel is synchronous with the GOI’s green hydrogen policy, promising cheaper renewable power, fee waiver for interstate power transmission for 25 years for projects commissioned before June 2025, land in renewable energy parks, and manufacturing zones to help local industries limit the use of fossil fuels. This initiative follows Welspun Corp Ltd.’s announcement in October 2021 to join a global industry project (H2Pipe JIP) with industry leaders including Tata Steel Ltd. to develop the world’s first guideline for the transportation of hydrogen gas in existing and new pipelines.
Commenting on this development, Vipul Mathur, Managing Director & CEO, Welspun Corp Limited (WCL) said, “WCL is working towards strengthening its expanding product portfolio both in India and globally while focusing on building a future-ready world.
Our strategic partnership with Tata Steel enables us to jointly adopt and build awareness towards the usage of Green Hydrogen in our daily lives. This endeavor is in line with our ongoing efforts to strategically embed ESG drivers across our business, and the Government’s vision for a net-zero economy by 2070.”
Rajeev Singhal, Vice President Marketing & Sales (Flat Products), Tata Steel Limited (TSL) said, “The Green Energy Strategic partnership with WCL is an important step in our journey towards sustainability. This will enable us to jointly develop steel for safe transportation of hydrogen gas which is a critical requirement for adoption of hydrogen fuel in line with GoI’s National Hydrogen Mission.”
