Honda is set to produce solid-state batteries for electric vehicles (EVs) that can double the current market range, providing a range of up to 620 miles on a single charge.
Honda plans to produce solid-state batteries for electric vehicles (EVs) that can double the current market range of EVs. The company claims its new technology can provide a range of up to 620 miles (1,000 kilometres) on a single charge, potentially addressing the “range anxiety” issue in EV adoption.
Honda has announced a demonstration production line for future solid-state batteries, which it plans to incorporate into mass-market electric vehicles in the second half of the decade.
Keiji Otsu, president and representative director, Honda R&D, said, “The all-solid-state battery is an innovative technology that will be a game changer in this EV era. Replacing engines that have been supporting the advancements of automobiles to date, batteries will be the key factor of electrification,” Live Science reported.Solid-state batteries are predicted to be 25% cheaper to build, 50% smaller, and 35% lighter than liquid lithium-ion batteries used in modern electric vehicles. Honda’s solid-state cells are inadequate to fit into any of the company’s current vehicle models, which is the primary impediment to the technology. Beginning in 2025, the new facility will address that issue.
