Increase productivity through lean manufacturing

By June 5, 2024 5:26 pm IST

D Mahesh Gurav, Product Manager, Exor India, explores how cutting-edge technologies like AI-driven robotics, IoT solutions, and continuous learning initiatives are accelerating manufacturing processes, enhancing productivity, and driving growth in the industry.

What are the latest trends and innovations impacting the automation industry?

First off, we have artificial intelligence (AI). It’s like teaching machines to think for themselves! They can learn, adapt, and even make decisions. Then there’s Advanced Robotics. Robots are getting smarter and can now do complex tasks that were once thought impossible.

You must have heard of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). It’s all about connecting devices and systems to gather and analyse data in real time. Edge and cloud computing are also making waves. They handle massive amounts of data from automated systems.

Immersive technologies like VR and AR are changing the game too. They create lifelike experiences, which are super useful for training.

Additive manufacturing, or 3D printing, is another big one. It’s used to make complex parts and components, especially in industries like aerospace and healthcare. As systems get more connected, cybersecurity is crucial. We need to keep our automated systems safe from threats.

The arrival of 5G connectivity is set to boost automated systems even further with its fast data speeds and low latency. Blockchain is being used in supply chain management, ensuring transparency and security. Finally, wearables are improving worker efficiency by providing additional visualisation and improving safety. These trends are revolutionising the automation industry, making processes more efficient, reducing costs, and opening new opportunities.

What strategies leverage advanced robotics and AI-driven systems for improved productivity?

First up, we have collaborative robots or cobots for short. These friendly robots are designed to work side-by-side with humans. They can help with everything, from carrying heavy parts to working on assembly lines. Plus, they’re quick to adapt to changes, which can save time and money.

Next, we have AI-powered robots. These smart robots are helping to bridge the gap between humans and technology. They can solve problems and adapt to changing customer expectations. Then there’s computer vision and sensory modalities. This is all about helping robots understand and respond to their environment. Computer vision lets robots see their surroundings, while other sensors provide feedback on their movements and interactions.

Algorithms and optimisation are also key. These techniques help robots perform precise assembly tasks. One common method is using artificial neural networks to process data. Safety is also crucial, so we have safety features like collision detection and avoidance and safety-rated sensors. These ensure that robots can work safely alongside humans.

We consider ergonomics. This is all about making sure that working with robots doesn’t cause physical strain or discomfort. By integrating these strategies, we can improve precision and productivity in the automation industry.

Please discuss advancements taking place in the manufacturing operations.

Exor is doing some wonderful stuff with the X Platform. Exor is all about quality and innovation. Exor has even built its own smart factory using the X Platform and CORVINA Cloud, along with a bunch of Intel technologies. This has helped us access data across the company, work more efficiently, reduce waste, and improve the workflow.

Corvina is offering IoT digitalization solutions for manufacturers. Corvina is using real-time data and lean manufacturing strategies to improve operations and increase productivity. Corvina solutions provide data-driven insights and lean manufacturing concepts that help identify bottlenecks, reduce waste, and increase overall productivity. Corvina also offers advanced smart manufacturing and smart machine industrial IoT solutions that allow real-time monitoring, predictive maintenance, and remote-control capabilities. Both Exor and Corvina are using the power of the X Platform to improve their operations and stay ahead of the competition.

How do you address manufacturing challenges to scale up processes in the industry you are engaged in?

Exor and Corvina, we’re really pushing the envelope when it comes to scaling up our manufacturing processes. We’ve got this super cool smart factory in Verona, Italy. It’s like stepping into the future! We’ve packed it with the latest tech and some cutting-edge software based on our own X Platform. It’s a fantastic showcase of what’s possible with today’s technology.

The X Platform is like a bridge between the dreams of machine builders and the practical needs of factory owners. It’s got everything—scalability, interoperability, security, data analytics, and edge capability. And the best part? It’s already paving the way for Industry 5.0, which is all about enhancing the human experience and promoting sustainability.

We’re also big believers in the power of data and cloud technology. Our solutions provide real-time status and work-in-progress advancements. And for those who like to keep an eye on things from afar, we offer remote monitoring and control of factory operations. This includes data analysis for process optimisation, predictive maintenance to reduce downtime, and centralised management for standardization. We’re not just tackling current manufacturing challenges; we’re also gearing up for the future. We strongly believe in continuous innovation and staying ahead of the curve.

What strategies can be implemented to create a culture of continuous learning, upskill workers, and empower them to make decisions?

At Exor, we’re always inclined towards learning and growing. We’ve got this wonderful option called “Academy,”where our team and business partners get to learn all about our technology. It’s like school, but way more fun!

It’s all about learning new skills that take you beyond what you already know. It’s like a web developer deciding to dive into mobile app development. Exciting, right? And we never stop learning. Staying in tune with the latest innovations and refining our skills. We also believe in empowering our team. We want them to take ownership of their work and make decisions. It’s all about boosting confidence and fostering responsibility.

What technologies will you suggest for scale-up manufacturing, while minimizing costs to optimize production efficiency?

We suggest our X Platform to scale up manufacturing while minimising costs and optimising production efficiency.

We at Exor are dedicated to leveraging technology to enhance manufacturing efficiency. Our revolutionary X Platform is designed to elevate manufacturing capabilities by offering comprehensive solutions such as remote access, fleet management, predictive maintenance, and edge computing. Moreover, our state-of-the-art smart factory located in Verona, Italy, serves as a testament to the potential of Industry 4.0 digitization, integrating cutting-edge technologies like 5G and AI. Our industrial IoT solutions, notably CORVINA, are tailored for real-time monitoring and predictive maintenance, ensuring seamless operations. Embedded systems also form a core part of our offerings, reflecting our commitment to continuous innovation and excellence. In essence, we are poised to shape the future of manufacturing by minimising costs and maximising production efficiency.
