“Enhance Global Competitiveness to Promote Manufacturing” [June 2012]

By June 19, 2012 12:40 pm IST

Growth of the manufacturing sector can be ensured through global competitiveness only, and this necessitates maximum utilisation of all resources including the manufacturing equipment and human resources at highest efficiencies- Ramisetti Sridhar, Managing Director, DMG Mori Seiki India
Machine Tools, being a mother industry, have a multi-fold importance in the industrial growth of a country – as a manufacturing sector itself and as a necessary enabler for all other manufacturing industries. Indian manufacturing sector is at present passing through a very unique phase characterised by:• Unanimously accepted huge potential of domestic market • High expectations of the global markets from India as a source of quality, economical goods  • Desire to grab this opportunity along with a cautious approach about the uncertainties of global economy• Awaited common goals and directions, supported by concrete steps to facilitate the growth efforts of each industry, which is now being planned through National Manufacturing Policy.According to Ramisetti Sridhar, Managing Director, DMG Mori Seiki India, “The Indian industry has demonstrated in some cases its capability to achieve world class excellence in manufacturing. This is noticed by the world and hence the expectations have also gone up. The exposure to these expectations and understanding of world class manufacturing has put the Indian manufacturing on the right path to excellence”.
DMG Mori Seiki India, represents the leading machine tool manufactures – DMG from Germany and Mori Seiki from Japan, and brings the high end machine tools to the Indian manufacturers along with the manufacturing technology from these global companies.
“Now, the industry needs to speed up the progress on this path and spread the excellence culture throughout the manufacturing industry. The use of word class equipment, use of world class quality systems, and whole hearted participation of everybody involved needs to become the norm”, he urged. “We need to create the highway to manufacturing excellence as our targets are high and are to be achieved in a short time”, Mr. Sridhar anticipates.
Hurdles in optimising resources and skillsThe Indian industry still lacks when it comes to optimising resources and skills for industrial manufacturing. According to Mr. Sridhar, “The Indian manufacturers have still to compromise while making the investments in the right equipment due to financial reasons like funds availability.  The industrial eco-system should try to encourage and support the decisions keeping in view the long term goals of quality and excellence. We need to have high productivity, high reliability equipment rather than focusing only on lower cost of investment”.
The emphasis on effective utilisation of human resources also needs to be strengthened. “Systematic training and certification systems for manufacturing jobs by the industry or jointly with the educational institutions will help in effective utilisation of skilled resources”, he believes.
Encourage Foreign InvestmentIn an aim to promote the manufacturing sector and create jobs, the government needs to develop an approach to the plan that identifies machine tools as sector that will deepen technology capabilities in manufacturing, Mr. Sridhar suggests.
Being a high-tech area, machine tools industry demands a globally collaborative approach (like the DMG – Mori Seiki Cooperation) which is proving to be useful. If the government policies encourage such global machine tool manufacturers to start production in India, it may help in improving the technology capabilities of user industries.
Needs to anticipate future developmentCreating 100 million jobs in the next 10 years is not going to be an easier task! It’s a big challenge. While the plan’s approach for Inclusive growth highlights this need for creating jobs, there is a simultaneous expectation of 25 per cent share of GDP coming through manufacturing.
